The Doctor [userpic]
(2) Two Doctors, two destinies.....

we're feeling: Heeere we go again....
tardis radio: howling... well, what exactly is that noise, anyway?

Continued from here.

The Doctor crawled out of the rude tent, emitted a gaping yawn, and stretched his aching limbs. Some kind soul had left him a bucket of water; he dipped his finger in, snatching it out in shock at the burning cold. There was nothing for it, though. With a grimace at the impending discomfort, he slapped a bit at his unruly hair, pulled his jacket straight, plunged both hands into the water, and vigorously scrubbed his face.

Dawn had long since broken, but the sun was hidden by roiling clouds; ominous auroras flickered across the sky and the wind blew dry and cold. The camp was bustling; stern, angry warriors, amusingly colorful in their armor and paints, carried supplies or polished weapons or drilled on the distant slopes. Twenty rows of shelters, eight men to a unit, ranged in a ragged line along the side of a desolate hill.... thousands of warriors had dug in here, all waiting for an unspecified sign from some unspecified threat. Whatever it was, thought the Doctor, it looked as though they were ready to meet it without any help from him.

And if not for the thirty-foot chain firmly staked to the tent's main support, he could have been miles away by now.

Really, it eroded one's faith in human nature. Or whatever species these people were.

He'd be through the stake in another three hours, thanks to the sharp edge of the manacle on his left ankle. Ben and Polly must be frantic by now -- oh, and Jamie too; but the lad was a trooper, from what the Doctor had seen. He could only hope that they hadn't wandered off by the time he got back to the TARDIS.

Shouts and the thunderous sounds of a returning cavalcade attracted his attention. The giant bird-like mounts swarmed over the hill, their riders armored in silver and sky-blue.

A flash of red caught the Doctor's attention. Among the riders, just too far away for identification, a humanoid figure was draped like a sack across one creature's saddle. The troop had brought home a prisoner.

The Doctor frowned in disquiet. They'd probably bunk the prisoner with him, which was just as well, as it was probably one of his friends; but he'd have to hide the scraps of loose wood around the stake. And his senses had been tingling all morning, as though there was something on the edge of his mind that he really ought to know.

Several miles away, in the red-and-bronze camp of the blue riders' mortal foes, another Doctor scratched his unruly hair and hoped Jamie and Victoria had landed somewhere safe.

The Brigadier took out his revolver and cocked it. He didn't know what these things were, but they weren't friendly, and he had enough ammo to take down a few of them--and with a little luck, scare off the rest.

"Well, Jamie, it looks like we have a bit of a fight on our hands. Do you happen to know where the Doctor is, just now?"

"He was in the TARDIS the last I knew! I thought he was out here, but it was the wee lass!" One of the creatures lunched at the young Scott and he ducked and rolled, avoiding the powerful clawed feet. The highlander came to his feet, swiping it with his knife. The beastie howled, spinning on the lad, and made another lunge.

The Brigadier aimed, almost casually, at the creature just as it started its lunge and fired, then tired and fired again at its nearest companion.
Then suddenly he felt a vicious blow on the head, that sent him staggering into another blow. He fired randomly in the direction the blows seemed to be coming from, but by the time the shot rang out he was already falling to ground unconcious.

A gunshot split the air, thundering close to the young highlander's ear, just as he managed to avoid another blow from the thing leaping toward him.

Jamie chanced a glance in the Brigadier's direction to see the man collapse to the ground, unconscious. The highlander growled, and drove himself head first into the gut of the gloating being looming over the Brigadier’s body. No monster or alien devil was going to get away with injuring any of his allies….

The being gasped, and stumbled backward, taking Jamie and itself to the ground in a tangle of limbs and flying fists.

((ooc squee, I so love Jamie, he has wonderful thugish tendencies))

Bolting out of the TARDIS, Ben was stunned to see Jamie rolling on the ground, thrashing against one of the aliens he had seen on the scanner.

A man was being hauled up off the ground and placed over one of the strange creatures. It's master only regarded Ben briefly before mounting the thing and ridding off.

The other alien things closed in around the Scott's boy.

"Jamie!" Ben shouted, racing toward the boy and yanking the creature off of him. And slamming his fist into what he thought was its face. "Were in hell is the Govner?"

The beasties were closing in, but the one he had attacked was now not moving.

The lad held up his knife, directing it toward the creatures closing in. "Do ye think we can take them?" He asked, the blonde at his side.

There was a volley of click, which snapped Jamie's attention back to his opponents.

The humanish devils were now pointing long sticks that looked strangely like rifles at them. Jamie didn't like the look of events, and slowly started to lift his hands in the air.

"Oi, best to save yer strengh, Nipper." Ben said lifting his hands and glancing back to the TARDIS. Hopefully Polly and Victoria would keep out of trouble. He returned his attention to the alien and narrowed his brow. "How much do yer want to bet, they know where the Doctor is?"

Victoria ran frantically for the TARDIS. Shouts rang out behind her as Jamie and the Brigadier engaged the attacking forces, but she had to keep going; she had to reach the Doctor. If anyone could help them, he could.

Something snagged her jacket from the side. She ripped free, glancing over her shoulder at the wicked pike that had almost pinned her to the ground. A warrior bore down on her; the scaly head of its mount bobbed like a bird's, its powerful beak wide open. With a terrified scream, she dodged between its legs; the momentum carried it well past her, and she threw herself forward -- there was no time to stop now.

The TARDIS doors were closed. She pounded on them, half-crying, then turned and pressed herself against the battered blue wood, eyes wide with fear as the Brigadier fell and the pike-men surrounded her.

The doors opened. She tumbled backwards, heard startled exclamations and the click of the doors closing again. Swallowing convulsively, she looked up to see who had caught her, and found herself staring into a stranger's eyes.

Ben! Who is she?!" Polly asked, large brown eyes wide as she hurriedly pulled the lever and closed the TARDIS doors.

"How should I know, Duchess?" Ben snapped looking down at the pretty dark-haired girl he was helping over to the Louis the XIV chair in front of the counsel. For the last hour they had been wandering around the TARDIS looking for the Doctor. Their explorations finally lead them to the control room, when they heard a pounding on the doors. "It's all right, Miss.,” he said, helping the girl to sit. He strayed a glance to Polly, who had joined his side.

Victoria stared at the husky red-haired sailor and the pretty blonde girl.

"I'm -- I'm Victoria Waterfield," she said meekly. "But who are you? And what are you doing in the TARDIS?"

Polly Wright smiled gently at the girl. She couldn't have been more than 17.
"I'm Polly, this is Ben. It's all right, you safe here." She looked around the counsel room. "I know this place is a bit overwhelming, but nothing is going to hurt you here. "

Ben blinked, gaze wide and surprised. "Wait just one minute, Miss did yer just say, TARDIS? You know what this ship is? How?" He looked at Polly, who nodded. Both of them fixed the girl with curiosity.

"Well, how do you know what it is?" Victoria demanded indignantly. "I've been traveling with the Doctor for two years now -- I ought to know what it is!"

She froze in sudden fear. "This is the Doctor's ship, isn't it? It must be, Jamie was out there. But he didn't recognize me, and now he's out there with those, those.... oh, can't we help him?"

'Two years?" Ben asked, curious. He glanced at Polly, brow raised. "The Duchess and I've been wiv the Doctor for about a year now, Never heard him mention your name, lov."

Polly took the girl's hand in her own. "I'm afraid it is, Victoria...We only just picked up Jamie, from the Highlands." Her brow wrinkled, could it be, this girl knew Jamie from the future. "Ben, see if you can help Jamie..." Polly told the young man, who nodded and dashed to the door. "Victoria, what does your Doctor look like?"

"But Jamie was already traveling with the Doctor when I... oh! The time must be wrong!" Victoria nodded, trying to work it out. "But what do you mean, what does he look like? He's the same as always -- about so high, black hair -- oh no. If I've been sent back before I met the Doctor, he won't recognize me either, will he?"

Tears pricked at her eyes. The TARDIS was all the home she had -- but this wasn't her TARDIS, not really. Not wanting Polly to see her cry, she turned toward the viewscreen... and shrieked in fright.

"Oh, Polly, look!"

The fight had ended as quickly as it had begun. Ben and Jamie were being led away in chains.

"We've got to do something! But what will we do?"

Alarmed, Polly watched her two friends as they were dragged away, and crossed over to the coat stand. She removed her coat and purse, and glanced at Victoria. "One of these days, I'd like to materialize on a nice sunny patch with a beach, were we can take a holiday. Well, we can't let them get into to much trouble. We'll follow, at a distance." She said, feeling a little weary of trouble. "Sound like a good idea to you?"
