[[It should be noted that the Second Doctor in this timeline is a post-War-Games Doctor, and that he is traveling with an older Victoria, whom he picked up from Earth some time after The Three Doctors. That said, on with the show.]]

"It's no good," grumbled the Doctor at last. "Most of it is all right, but the vortex stabilizer requires an extra part that I don't have." Fitting the floor panel back into place, he brushed off his grubby hands on his equally grubby sleeves and stood up, shaking his head in disappointment.

Victoria Waterfield looked around in alarm. The TARDIS, once a nostalgic refuge as well as a suddenly had the ominous air of a trap. "But Doctor -- does that mean we can't land?"

"Not at all, Victoria -- not at all. In fact, we must land if I'm to take the proper components apart and cobble up a new connection. Hang on--" He descended on the controls, and Victoria wisely held onto the edge of the hexagonal console as the ship bucked, swayed, and finally shuddered to a halt.

"That's done it!" crowed the Doctor, rubbing his hands together. "Hmm... we're in deep space, stationary in relation to gravity but moving nonetheless... a ship of some sort, I imagine. Breathable atmosphere, too."

Victoria smiled. "I'm not even going to ask if it's safe. We've done that too many times."

"Still," mused the Doctor, "it's only polite to call upon our hosts and let them know why we're here."

"And if there's trouble?"

"Well...." He shrugged ruefully, but there was a humorous twinkle in his eyes as he activated the door control. "Then we'll find out."

"Doctor? Doctor!" Where has he gone now?

Jo Grant peered back down the corridor in vain. The Doctor had vanished, around a corner, into a back room, somewhere. "One trip, just like the old days he said," Jo muttered to herself. "Come with me, he said!" She started walking back towards where the TARDIS had materialised. "It's just like I remembered, I suppose. Look on the bright side Jo, at least you aren't getting forgetful in your old age!"

Turning a corner, she spotted the familiar blue and rushed over to it as the door began to open. "Doctor! Thank goodness, I was almost worried... Doctor?"

The man who stuck his head out of the TARDIS, however, was nothing like the tall, white-haired gentleman with whom she was familiar. Attired in a ratty suit and string tie, his black hair disheveled, this Doctor was scarcely taller than Jo herself.

"Good heavens," he exclaimed, wringing her hand in delight. "Why, it's Miss Grant! But--"

For a moment he thought the TARDIS's instruments had gone haywire and landed them back in UNIT. A quick look around disproved that notion. The semi-circular corridor where the TARDIS sat was very mundane, but the tachyonic locks on the access panels couldn't have come from any earlier than the twenty-second century.

"Whatever," asked the Doctor, "are you doing all the way out here?"

Jo smiled blankly as the man in front of her enthusiatically shook her hand. "I came with the Doctor, I mean, I came with you... the other you! You know, I still haven't gotten used to what to call you both."

She quickly peered around the TARDIS, hoping to see another, or was it the same? The corridor was disappointing however and only held empty space. "I can't seem to find him though, he was just behind me."

The Doctor looked past the TARDIS as well, his brow furrowing when he saw the empty corridor. A pinkish light was blinking in the distance. That couldn't be a good thing.

"Dear, dear, this isn't good," he muttered. "Two of us in one place... and I can't move until I fix my TARDIS. If we should come together, it could be a disaster!" He peered around again, running a hand through his hair. "Is there anyone on board this ship?"

"I haven't seen anyone since we landed here, but it hasn't been--" Jo started as she spotted another head coming through the TARDIS doors.

"Oh, hello!" she said cheerfully.

"Hello!" Victoria extended a welcoming hand, instinctively liking the blond woman with the bright, disingenuous gaze. "I'm Victoria Waterfield -- but you two seem to know each other?"

Jo shook the hand, glad (though she didn't know why) that another woman was here for company. As for her question... "We met some time ago, where I used to work. It's all very complicated I'm afraid. You should probably ask the Doctor about it, though if he's anything like mine you won't understand a word he's said!"

"Yours?" said Victoria in surprise. "I'm afraid I don't understand it already. Doctor, when we get out of here, you're going to have a lot to explain!"

"Well, now... no time for that," said the Doctor hastily. "As we're relatively stable right now, I do have to repair my ship. But Jo, you say my counterpart is wandering about somewhere... I don't like it. He's bound to get in all sorts of trouble."

Victoria thought that was an odd thing to say about someone who was probably just like the Doctor she knew. But looking over at her new friend, she thought of the distress she'd be in if ever she lost her Doctor, and her course was plain.

"Perhaps," she said, going to stand by Jo, "the two of us should go look for him!"

"Ooh, that sounds like a marvellous idea! It was nice seeing you again Doctor, but it's probably best if I do find my Doctor as soon as possible."

Jo turned to Victoria and decided that she liked her new travelling companion, even if it was to be a very short trip. "I'll try to explain about the Doctor, I mean, the Doctors, while we're wandering the corridors. And believe me, there are a lot of them!"

"Yes, do give him my regards," the Doctor beamed, "and tell him he really oughtn't to wander about in a place like this on his own." He waved as they walked off, and then popped back into his TARDIS and shut the door.

"I'd love to hear it," said Victoria with a mischievous smile. "But is your Doctor quite so different from my Doctor? I've never heard him speak about his family -- but only the once." Her last words were quiet as she remembered the conversation that had taken place on a distant planet, only a day or so after she found herself quite alone in the world.

"I've heard a little about his people, the Time Lords, but the Doctor doesn't like to talk about them much. Touchy subject with him I believe. They had exiled him to Earth when I met him, I always thought that was why he disliked them so much."

Jo paused and looked at Victoria for a moment. She won't think I'm strange if I explain about the Doctor surely? Of course not, she's travelled with him, she would've seen stranger things.

"The Doctor... can change. His appearance, his voice, everything. I've seen three different incarnations of him, the one I used to travel with, your Doctor, and an older one. Something to do with his physiology I think. The Doctor never did explain it very well but when he gets to old, or so hurt that he can't heal, he changes. But he's the same person."

"They did?" Victoria's eyes were round. "Oh, how horrible! I knew he didn't want them to notice him -- that must have been why."

She listened in astonishment to the rest of Jo's story, scarcely able to believe it. Nothing in her experience with the Doctor had prepared her for that.

"Ohhh... that's... that's so sad," she whispered. "It must be like dying, in a way... to stop being something you were before."

"Yeah." They lapsed into silence as the closed doors grew in number.

"I'm not sure there's an end to this! The corridor just goes on and on!"

Jo turned around to look back and almost jumped out of her skin as a panel slid open to the right of her. "Oh my goodness! I almost had a heart attack!"

She wandered closer with Victoria close behind, and peered around the doorway into the newly found room. It was dark, the light from the corridor barely illuminated a table and some sort of square machine. Jo squinted. "It looks like... one of those machines that measures your heartbeat. Now what were they called again?"

Victoria, who had muffled a shriek as the door flew open, couldn't help laughing a bit. "It's just like old times! I first traveled with the Doctor when I was much younger, you know, and there was always something lurking behind the corner to jump out at one."

She peered at the machine, trying to remember what little medical terminology she knew. "An EKG -- at least where I live now. I don't even know if they had them in my original time. But what's it doing here?"

"I'm not sure. Shall we investigate?" Jo didn't wait for Victoria's reply, as she believed that she knew it already, and wandered into the dark room.

There was a thud and a muffled grunt in pain. "I think we should look for a light switch before we investigate. I just walked into a table."

Muffling a giggle, Victoria felt around on the wall by the door. Her hand passed over a sensor panel, and several bright lights came on at points around the ceiling, illuminating most of the room.

"Thanks." Jo bent down and rubbed her sore leg. "You wouldn't believe how often I do things like that."

With the lights on, it revealed what both of them suspected. The room was some sort of infirmary, though disused for some time judging by the haphazard way the machines and beds were placed around the room.

"I wonder if there is a bandaid floating around here," Jo muttered to herself.

"Oh, it's a common hazard. I used to turn my ankle all the time, but that was mostly because of my shoes."

Examining the area, Victoria frowned, feeling a touch of disquiet.

"Let's try in here," she said, heading for one of the banks of cabinets. "But I wonder why this place looks so badly disused. Surely if there were people on board, they'd want to keep the infirmary clean and ready."

"Maybe the place is deserted? But to leave it so quickly with the life support still working..."

"And who, or what, opened the door for us?" Jo swung around, feeling that someone was behind her. The room was empty.

Posted at: November 8th, 2007 07:06 pm (UTC)

"Maybe it opened by itself, the same way the light turned on?" Victoria looked around, shivering. "But it really is creepy. Suppose... suppose something happened to the crew, and they couldn't even come here for help."

In the hush after her words, there was a slight shivering in the air -- almost as though some sound had occurred deep inside the ship, barely audible from this distance.

"Jo," murmured Victoria, "did you hear something?"

Posted at: November 9th, 2007 07:40 am (UTC)

There it was again. Not a sound, but a reverberation, deep inside the ship. Or maybe it was a sound, a really deep roar?

"Yeah, I heard it. What do you think it is?"

And again it thudded.

"I think we should get back to the Doctor."

"I think you're right!" Instinctively grabbing Jo's hand, Victoria pulled her back toward the door, hoping that it would open as it had before.

It did.

But the corridor outside was totally different. Somehow, without their noticing, the entire room had moved.

"Oh dear." Jo was sure that the corridor had looked different just a few minutes ago. For one thing, that crashed pillar to the right of them wasn't there. There was no way the two of them could have climbed over it without help.

"I guess we go left? We better hurry, I don't want to be here when the next strange thing occurs!"

"I guess we do!" Victoria shuddered as the groaning noise came again -- much nearer now, as though part of the ship was under some terrible stress. "Come on, maybe we'll find a lift!" Resolutely, she pushed to the back of her mind the fact that they had no idea on what level they'd left the TARDIS.
